During term three each year Wellington secondary schools can receive coaching support for their match racing teams.
The programme provides access to:
- a fleet of four match racing keelboats
- a coach boat
- coaching equipment
- coaches
Each team is provided with up to six, 2 hour coaching sessions facilitated by a Wellington Ocean Sports Centre Match Racing Coach. Coaching takes place after school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Schools can involve their own coaching or support people in the programme but aren’t disadvantaged if they do not have these people involved.
Coaching is based out at the Wellington Ocean Sports Centre. The yachts leave from Chaffer’s Marina and sailing is generally on the inner harbour off Frank Kitts Park or off Oriental Bay.
The programme caters for up to 12 teams. Schools can include more than one team in the programme if they choose. A regatta is hosted by the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club to determine the College Sport Wellington Match Racing Champions.
There is a charge of $75 per sailor for the secondary schools match racing coaching programme. This cost includes all coaching sessions and entry into the College Sport Wellington Match Racing Championships.
