During the winter months Wellington youth sailors are able to participate in a youth match racing programme. The purpose of this programme is to introduce youth sailors from Wellington clubs to the match racing discipline and provide them with a platform for possible selection into the Wellington under 21 match racing squad. The programme runs over a sixteen week period beginning in May, with a break for the mid year school holidays.

The programme caters for up to eight teams. Two sessions are held each Saturday during the programme, one session in the morning for up to four teams and one in the afternoon for up to four additional teams. The programme begins by focusing on boat handling, using a fleet racing format. Once teams have developed a reasonable level of boat handling proficiency they are introduced to the various elements of match racing including:

  • Pre start maneuvering
  • Tactics and strategies in match racing
  • Match racing rules and regatta formats

If sailing needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather then sailors participate in a series of land based theory modules. The programme concludes with a match racing event where the teams sail a round robin regatta.
